Description

*U.S. WWI M1917 Brodie Helmet – Raw Edge, Magnetic, Chin Strap Marked “Pat. May 5. 1903”*

This is an unusual variant of the U.S. M1917 Brodie helmet, produced during World War I. It retains the classic early Brodie shape with a raw, unrolled rim and is magnetic—indicative of early steel construction. Notably, the chinstrap rivets are positioned unusually close to the outer edge and are circular in form.

The interior is painted black, a feature consistent with U.S. production. While the original liner is missing, remnants of the internal foam headband remain intact. The chin strap is constructed from pale brown webbing, and the buckle is clearly stamped with “Pat. May 5. 1903,” a marking commonly found on early U.S. military gear including M1917 helmets.

This helmet represents a U.S.-made version of the British MkI Brodie, with characteristic American variations—most notably in rivet placement and strap design. These helmets were standard issue for U.S. forces from 1917 through the early interwar period.

Condition:
Presented in good, used condition appropriate to its age and likely service history. The helmet shows typical signs of wear, including surface rust, discoloration, and finish loss. The liner is absent, but the foam headband remains. Please refer to the photos for a full visual assessment of condition.
