Description

*British, WW1-1914, Princess Mary Christmas Gift Fund Brass Tobacco Tin*

A fine original example of the iconic Princess Mary Christmas Gift Fund brass tin, issued in 1914 to British and Imperial troops serving during the First World War. The brass tin measures approximately 13 cm x 8.7 cm x 2.6 cm and is embossed on the lid with the bust of HRH Princess Mary within a laurel wreath, flanked by the letter “M” to either side. It bears the inscriptions “Imperium Britannicum,” “Christmas 1914,” and the names of allied nations: “France,” “Russia,” “Belgium,” “Japan,” “Servia,” and “Montenegro.”

The Princess Mary Gift Fund was established in late 1914, driven by a public appeal led by Princess Mary, daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. Its aim was to provide every sailor afloat and every soldier at the front with a small Christmas gift to boost morale and express national gratitude. Approximately 2.6 million tins were distributed, each originally containing items tailored to the recipient, such as tobacco, cigarettes, sweets, or writing materials. The tins were cherished keepsakes and often repurposed for personal items, letters, or photographs during and after the war.

*Condition*
This tin remains in overall good condition for its age, with a warm, even patina typical of original examples. Some denting commensurate with age is present, in particular to the side front panel and the top lid area near the "1914" inscription. The hinge functions well, and the lid opens and closes securely. Interior shows age-related spotting and light surface oxidation but retains its bright brass finish. The exterior retains clear, sharp embossing and legible details. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
