Description

*Sudan, Early 20th Century, Kaskara Sword with Tooled Leather Scabbard and Complete Suspension Harness (Beja Tribes)*

A fine and authentic example of a traditional Kaskara sword from Sudan, attributed to the Beja tribes of eastern Sudan and Eritrea, dating to the early 20th century. The Kaskara is the characteristic straight, double-edged sword of Sudan, Chad, and Eritrea. Its design is thought to represent a localized survival of the medieval Arab straight sword, with origins traced back to the 14th century. As noted by British Museum curator Christopher Spring, “in the central and eastern Sudan, from Chad through Darfur and across to the Red Sea province, the straight, double-edged swords known as Kaskara were an essential possession of most men.” The Kaskara was traditionally worn horizontally across the back or tucked between the upper arm and thorax, serving as both weapon and important status symbol.

This example measures approximately 58 cm overall, with a straight, double-edged iron blade of about 46.6 cm, ending in a characteristic spatulate tip. The hilt features a broad, straight iron cross-guard and a large disc-shaped pommel, both with heavy age patina and surface rust consistent with age. The wooden grip is tightly bound in leather with underlying raised cord ridges, a typical feature of Sudanese and Beja tribal workmanship.

The sword is housed in its original tooled leather scabbard, richly decorated with geometric and linear motifs, including diamond and cross-hatched patterns. Particularly notable is the presence of the complete original suspension harness, an uncommon survival. The harness includes wide leather shoulder straps, twisted support cords, and decorative triangular leather pendants — all designed to secure the sword across the back or at the side in traditional style.

*Condition*
The blade shows heavy surface rust and pitting throughout but remains structurally sound. The hilt leather is dry and cracked, with some areas of surface loss, yet remains overall intact and solid. The scabbard and suspension harness exhibit age-related dryness, surface cracking, and minor splits but are complete and stable. All components display authentic wear consistent with age and use. A rare opportunity to acquire a complete and original Beja Kaskara sword set, combining strong ethnographic interest with visually striking traditional decoration.
