Description

*British, WWII, Navy Four Medal Group to Mr F. Fleming London SW16 — Original Admiralty Box & Papers with 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Defence & War Medals*

A fine and complete Second World War medal group awarded to Mr F. Fleming of 80 Gleneldon Road, London SW16, comprising the 1939–45 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, and War Medal 1939–45. All medals are in mint condition with original, bright unworn ribbons and protective tissue wraps. The set is accompanied by the original Admiralty forwarding slip, reading: "The Secretary of the Admiralty presents his compliments and by Command of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty has the honour to transmit the enclosed Awards granted for service during the war of 1939-45." Also included is the original OHMS (On His Majesty’s Service) box addressed to Mr Fleming, and a campaign medal instruction leaflet detailing order of wear and entitlement.

This combination of medals indicates Royal Navy service involving operational duties (1939–45 Star), participation in the North African theatre or related Mediterranean operations (Africa Star), extended non-operational or home defence service (Defence Medal), and general wartime service (War Medal). The Defence Medal, less commonly awarded to sea-going personnel, suggests a period of shore-based or auxiliary duties, further adding to the interest of this set.

While the precise details of Mr Fleming’s naval career are not yet fully confirmed, the presence of the Africa Star hints at service in one of the key wartime campaigns, and the full London address offers an excellent basis for further research. The medals remain unengraved, consistent with standard Royal Navy issue practice at the time, except for gallantry awards.

*Condition*
All four medals are in excellent, unissued condition with bright, original ribbons. The Admiralty box retains its original labels and remains structurally sound, showing minor edge wear and small tears from postal handling. Paper slip and leaflet are clean and well-preserved with minor creasing. An exceptional, complete and research-worthy group, rarely found with its original packaging and paperwork intact. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
