Description

*British, WW1, Mk 3 Flechette Dart*

A British First World War Mk 3 aerial flechette dart, measuring approximately 12.7 cm long. Constructed from steel, it features a pointed head for penetration and a stabilizing tail fin section, connected via a central rod. The tail is typically lozenge- or rod-shaped to ensure the dart remains point-forward when dropped. This example shows typical surface rust and patina consistent with age and period battlefield recovery or storage. Unlike French "Aéronautique Militaire" darts (which sometimes carry maker initials), British flechettes, including the Mk 3, were typically unmarked. No single confirmed list of contractors for the Mk 3 is known.

The Mk 3 featured a refined two-piece design (separate head and tail joined by a shaft) to improve stability and point-down impact, but it was introduced late in the war as flechettes were being phased out, resulting in limited production and rarity today.

Historical context:
Flechettes were small steel darts used primarily in the early years of WW1 (1914–1916) as anti-personnel weapons, dropped from aircraft over enemy trenches and troop concentrations. Their design aimed to exploit gravity and high velocity to inflict injury. While they were quickly superseded by more effective aerial bombs, flechettes remain an iconic early aerial weapon and a fascinating example of WW1 innovation.

*Condition*
The dart displays a uniform brown patina with some surface rust, particularly visible along the head and shaft. Edges remain sharp and well-defined, with no significant distortions or bends. The original form and proportions are well-preserved, making it an excellent example for display. The mounting card and wire fixings are modern additions to facilitate safe handling and presentation. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
