Description

*Romanian, Cold War Army Wool Service Tunic, Socialist Republic Buttons, Râmnicu Sărat Factory 1972, Size 48*

An original Cold War period Romanian People’s Army wool service tunic manufactured in 1972 and retaining its internal factory production stamp from the Romanian state clothing enterprise at Râmnicu Sărat.

The tunic is constructed from heavy olive-green wool cloth typical of Romanian military uniform production during the Warsaw Pact period, the colour appearing slightly greener in hand than in the photographs. The garment follows the standard Romanian service pattern of the late 1960s–1970s, featuring a practical tailored cut designed for everyday service wear.

The front is fitted with two functional chest pockets with buttoned flaps, while the lower pockets are decorative false pockets forming part of the shaped waist construction rather than functioning storage pockets. The tunic closes with a vertical row of plain brown plastic buttons, a characteristic feature of Romanian service uniforms of the communist era. The shoulder boards and pocket flaps are secured with metal buttons bearing the coat of arms of the Socialist Republic of Romania, depicting the Carpathian mountains, industrial tower and rising sun within a wreath of wheat. These emblem buttons were standard Romanian military issue throughout the socialist period.

The tunic retains its shoulder boards intended to accept removable rank insignia. The rear of the garment features a central vent, while the sleeves terminate in plain cuffs typical of Romanian field and service dress.

Internally the tunic retains its original tan cotton lining together with the factory production stamp, identifying manufacture by the Romanian state clothing enterprise at Râmnicu Sărat.

Factory Markings: The interior production stamp reads approximately:
INTREP. DE CONF. RM. SARAT
TALIA / GROSIMEA III 48
ANUL CONF. 1972

This identifies manufacture by Întreprinderea de Confecții Râmnicu Sărat, a Romanian state clothing enterprise responsible for producing military uniforms for the Romanian People’s Army during the Cold War period. The size designation III 48 corresponds to the Romanian military sizing system, with 48 indicating chest size and III representing the height group.

Approx. Measurements: Shoulder to shoulder: 44 cm, Sleeve length: 61.5 cm, Hem to top of collar: 75 cm

Historical Note:
During the Cold War Romania maintained a substantial national army within the Warsaw Pact under the leadership of Nicolae Ceaușescu, although Romanian uniforms retained distinctive national characteristics rather than directly copying Soviet patterns. Olive wool service tunics of this type were widely worn during the 1960s through the 1980s, forming part of the standard duty uniform of the Romanian People’s Army. Rank was typically displayed on removable shoulder boards, often accompanied by branch insignia worn on the collar.

*Condition*
Service-worn example showing normal signs of age and use. The wool cloth remains structurally sound with general wear and light surface nap consistent with age. The tunic retains its original lining, factory production stamp, shoulder boards and socialist state emblem buttons. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
