Description

*British, c.1930s–WW2, Schermuly SPRA Line-Throwing Pistol Rocket Apparatus, Brass Frame, Serial No. 4500, Deactivated*

An impressive and historically important Schermuly line-throwing pistol rocket apparatus (SPRA), a specialised maritime rescue device used by the Royal Navy and merchant vessels during the early–mid 20th century. Constructed on a heavy brass flare-pistol style frame with a long steel launch barrel and stabilising forward handle, these devices were designed to fire a rocket carrying a line across long distances for rescue and ship-to-shore communications.

The pistol is stamped “Schermuly’s” and “PAT No 503324” to the brass receiver, with the additional marking S4 and serial number 4500 on the frame. British proof marks including Crown over V and Crown over CP are present on the brass components, confirming proofing through the British proof system. The launcher is chambered for 1" signal/line-throwing cartridges, which fired a rocket projectile from the extended steel barrel.

The apparatus features the distinctive secondary forward grip, allowing the operator to steady the launcher when firing the rocket. The grips are wooden (traditionally mahogany), and the pistol is mounted with a long steel launch tube designed to guide the rocket and its attached line during firing.

These pistols formed part of the Schermuly Pistol Rocket Apparatus system, a compact line-throwing rescue device widely carried aboard ships during the inter-war period and throughout the Second World War. The system allowed crews to fire a light line ashore or to another vessel, which could then be used to haul across heavier cables or breeches-buoy rescue gear. Devices of this type were credited with saving countless lives in maritime rescues and were standard safety equipment aboard many British ships.

The pistol remains mechanically functioning in that it still cocks and dry fires, although it has been professionally deactivated and certified by the Birmingham Proof House.

Approx. Measurements – Barrel length: 30 cm. Overall length: 39.5 cm.

History Note:
The Schermuly line-throwing system was developed by William Schermuly, a former merchant seaman who sought to improve maritime rescue equipment. Traditional shore-based rescue guns such as the Lyle gun required trained shore crews and precise aiming. Schermuly’s concept instead allowed ships themselves to fire a rescue line using rocket propulsion.

After years of development and initial scepticism from naval authorities, the system gained acceptance in the early 20th century and became widely adopted by shipping companies and navies. By the inter-war period and throughout World War II, Schermuly rocket apparatus were standard safety equipment aboard many naval and merchant vessels. The system proved extremely reliable and effective, allowing lines to be projected hundreds of metres even in poor weather conditions.

The technology also influenced a variety of military and rescue applications, including grapnel rockets, emergency aerial line launchers and signalling systems. The Schermuly name remains closely associated with maritime rescue equipment to this day.

*Condition*
The launcher remains in very good overall display condition, retaining its brass receiver and barrel extension with attractive aged patina. The grey-painted steel launch tube shows expected service wear, including areas of paint loss, small chips and light surface corrosion. The brass components display handling marks and natural patination consistent with age. The wooden grips remain solid and well preserved. The action cocks and dry fires, though the piece has been professionally deactivated and cannot discharge any projectile. Internal modifications are present consistent with UK deactivation standards. The launcher is accompanied by a Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House deactivation certificate dated 14/10/2025, confirming its legal inert status. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
