*British, 1890, Birmingham Hallmarked Sterling Silver Mounted Dress Cane - Walking Stick, by T.W.D (Thomas William Dee), Ornate Repoussé Ring Handle*
An elegant late Victorian sterling silver mounted dress cane featuring a distinctive circular ring handle with finely chased repoussé decoration. The silver mount is richly worked with scrolling foliate and floral ornament in high relief, typical of quality Birmingham cane and umbrella fittings of the late 19th century.
The handle consists of a large circular ring form, allowing the cane to be comfortably hooked over the arm when not in use, a fashionable and practical design associated with Victorian evening or theatre dress canes. The decorative knop and collar are elaborately engraved with floral and scrollwork patterns and incorporate a shield-shaped cartouche which appears to have been left blank for a personal monogram.
The silver mount bears a clear set of Birmingham hallmarks including the maker’s mark T.W.D, commonly attributed to Thomas William Dee, a Birmingham silversmith known for producing finely decorated silver mounts for canes, umbrellas and luxury accessories during the late Victorian period.
The cane retains its ebonised hardwood shaft, giving a refined appearance consistent with Victorian dress accessories. The lower end appears to be fitted with a darker section and later protective ferrule or tip.
Approx. Measurements – Overall length: 90 cm. Ring handle diameter: 9.7 cm.
History Note:
During the Victorian period walking sticks were an important element of gentlemanly dress and social etiquette. Beyond their practical use, they were often chosen as decorative accessories reflecting personal taste and status.
Birmingham was the centre of the British silver trade for cane and umbrella mounts, with numerous specialist makers producing finely chased sterling silver fittings. Silversmiths such as Thomas William Dee supplied these mounts to cane makers and retailers, creating fashionable dress canes intended for promenading, formal occasions and theatre wear. The large ring handle design seen here was particularly associated with elegant late-19th-century styles.
*Condition*
