*British, WW2, War Medal 1939–1945, King George VI Issue – Full Size Campaign Medal*
An original British War Medal 1939–1945, awarded for service during the Second World War.
The obverse bears the crowned left-facing portrait of King George VI with the surrounding legend: “GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX ET INDIAE IMP”. The reverse shows the well-known allegorical design by E. Carter Preston (E.C.P.), depicting a lion standing over a defeated dragon, symbolising the victory of Britain and the Allied powers over the Axis nations. Above the design are the dates 1939 – 1945. The medal is suspended from its original ribbon consisting of red with narrow white and blue central stripes, representing the colours of the British Union Flag.
This example is unnamed, as is correct for the vast majority of British WWII campaign medals issued to British and Commonwealth personnel.
Approx. Measurements – Diameter: 36 mm.
History Note:
The War Medal 1939–1945 was instituted in August 1945 to recognise full-time service in the British Armed Forces during the Second World War. It was awarded to all personnel who completed at least 28 days of full-time service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945, regardless of where that service took place. As a result, it became the most widely issued British campaign medal of the war, with over 5 million medals awarded. The design reflects Britain’s wartime struggle and ultimate victory. The lion — a traditional symbol of Britain — stands triumphant over a subdued dragon representing the enemy forces defeated in the conflict.
