~ Edwardian Sherwood Foresters 2nd Volunteer Battalion Other Ranks Spiked Blue Cloth Helmet ~
This blue cloth helmet is complete with the original silver metal cross piece, spike and rose bosses supporting a black leather backed chin chain.
To the front is the silver metal King's Crown helmet plate, whilst the centre has the silvered regimental badge on a red field marked '2nd VOLr BATTn, NOTTS & DERBY'. The interior has a light brown leather sweatband with a red draw string and green cloth inner visor lining.
The interior of the helmet is stamped with 'N 5632 04' and is signed in green pen 'Berridge 4 149'
~ Sherwood Foresters ~
The Sherwood Foresters was a regiment set up in 1881 during the Childers Reforms of the British Army. It merged the rifle volunteer and militia units of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire with two regular regiments, the 45th (Nottinghamshire) (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment of Foot and the 95th (Derbyshire) Regiment of Foot, with the regular regiments becoming 1st and 2nd Battalions of the new unit.
~ Dimensions ~
The helmet has a length of 11 inches (28 cm), a width of 7.25 inches (18.5 cm) and a height of 11 inches (28 cm) (including the spike).
~ Condition ~
The cloth has some moth holes mainly to the left hand side forward of rose boss (please refer to images). The inner lining is in decent order. The leather edge of the visor is slightly worn. The metal fittings are in good condition.
