1900 Pattern British Naval Cutlass by Mole

This is an excellent example of the final cutlass approved for British Naval use. The 1900 pattern retained the straight blade of the 1889 Pattern, but introduced a fuller running one-third of the blade length.

The cutlass was taken out of service in 1936 and was no longer to be issued for use by landing parties but was to be retained for ceremonial use, with numbers being limited to 20 for each ship with more than 500 personnel and 10 for ships with fewer personnel. It is generally accepted that the cutlass last saw combat service around 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion.

This particular sword was made by Mole, Birmingham which is a very sought after maker. The sword has a 28 inch blade with a total overall length of 34.5 inches (in scabbard). The base of the blade reads “Mole, Birmingham” and features the crow’s foot along with other markings on both sides of the blade.
