~ 19th Century Cased Surgeons Kit by I & W. Wood ~
A 19th Century cased set of surgeons instruments by the English company I & W. Wood of Manchester.
The set comes in its original leather bound fitted case with red velvet interior.
The main section holds 12 bone handled instruments.
The lid has an interior cover which opens to reveal two sections, one housing five stainless steel instruments, with another section holding two packs of surgeons needles and one pack of sewing silk.
The majority of the instrument are marked with either the manufacturers full name and address ‘I & W. Wood, 74 King St, Manchester’ or simply just ‘Wood’.
~ Dimensions ~
The cased set measures 22cm (8 ¾ inches) by 11cm 4 ⅓ inches) with a height of 4cm (1 ½ inches).
It weighs 520g.
~ Condition ~
Two of the instruments from the lid compartment are missing (see images).
The instruments are generally in a very good order with just some oxidation to the steel parts.
The case is sound with obvious wear to the outer leather surface but the velvet interior is quite clean with only light wear.
