The pattern 1889 cutlass is characterised by a straight flat blade and spear point. The hilt has a turned over edge basket guard with a slot for a wrist strap near the pommel and a cast iron ribbed grip.
The blade is stamped on the right side with ā94, the broad arrow over WD and with the Enfield proof marks on both sides.
Apart from the blade all the metal parts have been painted black.
The same War Department and Enfield marks are also found on the basket. The letter āNā is also marked above these.
Our example comes without a scabbard.
The pommel is stamped 28.
