Description

*Antique, British, Bosun’s “Persuader” Naval Cosh with Lead-Weighted Ends, Cord-Bound, c.19th Century*

A rare cord-bound bosun’s “persuader” – an evocative and seldom-seen piece of naval discipline from the age of sail.

A scarce example of a British naval bosun’s “persuader” or cosh, measuring 31 cm overall. This compact weapon is formed with two lead-weighted ends encased in tightly worked cord knotting, the entire piece wrapped in blackened cordage. The central shaft was designed with a degree of flexibility rather than a rigid core, allowing the weighted ends to swing with sap-like force—ideal for use in the confined spaces of a ship. Such pieces were typically improvised or handmade, with lead poured into cloth or leather pouches and then covered in intricate cordwork to withstand saltwater and heavy use.

Historical Note:
Bosun’s “persuaders” are closely associated with the realities of discipline and order aboard British naval and merchant vessels in the 19th and early 20th centuries. While the bosun’s pipe carried authority in signal, the persuader carried it in force, often used to control unruly sailors or to enforce obedience in tight quarters where a cutlass or belaying pin would be impractical. British sailors, with their skill in rope and cord work, commonly fashioned such implements, and their survival rate is low as many were destroyed or discarded once no longer needed. Today, they stand as evocative relics of shipboard life in the age of sail and steam.

*Condition*
The piece shows service wear commensurate with age. Cord covering is intact though worn in places, with some fraying and age-related surface losses. The flexible mid-section is typical of these weapons, and not a defect, allowing the leaded heads to swing in use. Both weighted heads remain firm, the cord knotting secure though showing areas of abrasion. Overall, a solid and characterful example in authentic “as found” condition. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
