~ Archaic Period Late 6th Century BC Illyrian Typology II Variant 2 Bronze Helmet ~
The bronze helmet is from the Greek, Macedonian or Illyrian culture. It is of the type issued to peasant farmers in times of emergency.
The helmet is raised from a single sheet, the bowl is of domed form with two parallel corrugated raised ridges to the upper face, running from back to front with incised lines, rectangular slot to the face, the edges bordered by thin rows of dots between shallow narrow bands, short flaring neck-guard developing behind cheek protectors, fitted on the perimeter with a border circles for all their length and having two holes at the extremities for the fastening of the chin strap.
Provenance: From an important London collection; formerly part of the ‘Raymonde’ family collection, formed during the early 1970’s; accompanied by a report by military expert Dr. Raffaele D’Amato. Currently owned by a retired British Admiral.
