Socket bayonet for use with the .303 caliber Lee-Enfield No. 4 rifle. The No. 9 MK1 was the result of a post-war effort to replace the No. 4 spike bayonet. It was a straightforward, practical design with a robust socket attached to the clip-point blade of the No. 5 Mk. I bayonet. The No. 5 scabbard was retained for use with the No. 9 Mk. I bayonet. Production began in 1947, even prior to official approval of the No. 9 Mk. I.

Apart from ROF Poole and RSAF Enfield, it’s believed that three private firms produced limited quantities of the No. 9 Mk. I bayonet. These bayonets bear markings on the ledge indicating the manufacturer’s dispersal code and the broad arrow. This bayonet was manufactured by Francis & Barnett Ltd., known for producing motorcycles nicknamed the “Fanny-B.” These bayonets are very rare.

Supplied with the correct No 5 scabbard marked with Wilkinson dispersal code S294.
