*British, George VI 1827 Pattern Naval Officers Sword, Very Good Blade*
A very good, named example of a George VI Royal Naval Officers Sword.
Marked on Spine “Made in England”
Marked on blade – “GVIR” Crown Cypher, on the obverse Crown with fouled anchor
Marked on Guard – “R.G.J”
The design of the 1827 Pattern Naval Sword was based on the earlier 1805 Pattern, with some modifications. Regulation gilt brass hilt with a handsome lions head pommel and lions mane backstrap. The hinged lock is engraved with the officers initials “R.G.J” White rayskin grip bound with brass twistwire. The hilt retains its original bullion sword knot. Proved mark within a six pointed star on obverse ricasso. Letter B engraved on spine. Blade engraved with crowned fouled anchor and on the obverse with “GVIR” Crown Cypher and on the spine “Made in England”. The blade is straight and single-edged, measuring approximately 80 centimeters in length, 94.5cm overall. It features a narrow fuller running along most of the blade’s length to reduce weight and increase balance.
Housed in its original black leather scabbard with three gilt metal mounts amd two suspension rings. The top with retaining pin to lock the sword into the scabbard when the folding guard is down.
*Condition*
This is a very collectible 1827 sword with a very good blade. There is a small ding to the short crossguard, otherwise the grip is in excellent condition. The sword knot is worn in places. The scabbard fits securely, hinged lock works nicely. The scabbard is in very good condition with tight stitching, minor signs of wear and tear commensurate with age and service.
