Description

*British Royal Navy, 1998, 4.5-Inch (113mm) Naval Practice Shell Case, PRAC W1A2,  Royal Ordnance Birtley (RLB)*

A large and highly displayable original British Royal Navy 4.5-inch naval round. This is a hollow shell case entirely suitable for safe display. Retaining its full-length brass cartridge case and complete base assembly, this is a striking late Cold War-era piece with excellent visual presence and crisp ordnance markings.

This is a complete fixed QF round for the Royal Navy’s 4.5-inch (113mm) Mk 8 naval gun system. The imposing proportions—approximately 70cm in height with a broad 16.5cm base—give it a substantial and commanding display profile, typical of modern naval ammunition.

The base is clearly stamped “4.5 14051-08 RLB 6/98 320”, identifying manufacture by Royal Ordnance, Birtley (RLB) in June 1998. Produced at the historic Birtley site—long regarded as one of the principal centres of British ordnance manufacture and known for high-quality brass cartridge production—this adds a desirable “maker” element for collectors. Additional black stencilling includes “PRAC W1A2”, confirming a full-weight practice configuration used for realistic training and live firing exercises. Further markings such as “SHELL GD 07/98”, “BS81196”, “625AA”, and “0898 1149” represent standard assembly dates, drawing numbers, and batch or inspection codes. The base retains its correct naval primer, marked “N44 Mk / 083 / 3/1BN / 98”, contributing to the technical completeness and authenticity of the piece.

Approx. Measurements – Height: 70 cm. Base diameter: 16.5 cm.

History Note:
The 4.5-inch Mk 8 gun was the Royal Navy’s standard medium-calibre naval gun from the 1970s through the late 20th century, fitted to vessels including Type 21, Type 22, and Type 23 frigates, as well as Type 42 destroyers. By the late 1990s, when this example was produced, the Mk 8 remained in frontline service during a period of high operational readiness, with Royal Navy vessels routinely deployed on patrol and expeditionary duties worldwide. Practice rounds such as this were essential for maintaining crew proficiency under realistic firing conditions.

*Condition*
Condition is good overall, with honest service wear consistent with handling and use. The brass case shows areas of tarnishing, spotting, and age-related staining, but remains structurally sound and visually attractive. The base markings are clear and well preserved, enhancing both display appeal and collector interest. Completely inert and safe for display purposes only. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

Please contact the shop prior to purchase if you would like to arrange collection.
