HMS H7
HMS H7 was a British H-class submarine built by Canadian Vickers in Montreal. Laid down on 19 May 1915 and commissioned in June that year, she had a crew of 22 and a length of 171 feet (52 m). Powered by diesel and electric engines, she reached speeds of 13 knots (24 km/h) on the surface and 11 knots (20 km/h) submerged, with a range of 1,600 nautical miles (3,000 km) at 10 knots (19 km/h).
Designed to Royal Navy specifications as a Holland 602-type submarine, H7 displaced 364 long tons surfaced and 434 long tons submerged. She was armed with four 18-inch (460 mm) bow torpedo tubes, carrying eight torpedoes, and a 6-pounder Hotchkiss gun. HMS H7 was sold in 1921.
HMS E4
HMS E4 was a British E-class submarine built by Vickers, costing £101,900. Laid down on 16 May 1911, launched on 5 February 1912, and commissioned on 28 January 1913, she served in the 8th Submarine Flotilla. E4 took part in early World War I patrols in the North Sea, engaging German naval forces and airships. She fired on enemy submarines, sank the German trawler Senator von Berenburg Goszler, and survived air attacks. In September 1915, she was fitted with anti-aircraft guns for Zeppelin defence, later engaging the airship SL3.
On 15 August 1916, E4 collided with her sister ship E41 during exercises off Harwich, sinking with all hands. E41 also went down, but 14 crew members survived. Both submarines were salvaged, repaired, and recommissioned. E4 remained in service until the end of World War I, listed in the 9th Submarine Flotilla. She was decommissioned in December 1918 and sold for scrap to the Upnor Ship Breaking Company on 21 February 1922.
