Guards Machine Gun Battalion. The date 1916 relates to the date that the Guards Machine Gun training centre was created. A WW1 issue die struck cap badge worn only 1917-18 by the Guards Machine Gun Battalion. Redesignated 8th May 1918 as the Guards Machine Gun Regiment. Crowned ‘GMG’ (Guards Machine Gun) cypher to the centre of a circlet bearing the Guards motto “Quinque juncta in uno” (Five joined in one) and the date “1916” set upon a hob-nailed star. At the points of the star .303 rifle bullets and between each one the emblems of the five foot guards – a grenade, a rose, a thistle, a shamrock and a leek. With original slider
