Operational History
Early Career
At the start of World War II, Tribune operated in the North Sea and off the Scandinavian coast. Despite conducting several patrols and attacks, she had no confirmed sinkings. Her targets included an unidentified German submarine, the U-56, the German tanker Karibisches Meer, and the merchant vessel Birkenfels.
Mediterranean Service
In the Mediterranean, Tribune damaged the French merchant ship Dalny, which was later beached to prevent sinking. The next day, she further damaged the already grounded Dalny. She also torpedoed and damaged the German tanker Präsident Herrenschmidt and attempted to attack the Italian merchant vessel Benevento, though she missed her target.
Wartime Propaganda Role
In 1943, HMS Tribune was featured in the British wartime propaganda film Close Quarters, portraying HMS Tyrant on a North Sea patrol near Norway.
Post-War Fate
Tribune survived the war and was sold for scrap in July 1947. She was dismantled by Thos. W. Ward at Milford Haven in November 1947. Her pennant number, N76, was later reused in the 1951 film Appointment with Venus, representing a fictional submarine used to evacuate a pregnant pedigree cow from the German-occupied Channel Islands.
