Description

Here we have something fascinating, a truly unique longarm. What we have is a fusil that was acquired in the United States, this fusil was manufactured in Birmingham, circa 1770 by the gunsmith Robert Wilson who had a contract to sell firearms to the United States.

The fusil is a type of light musket, originally used as a hunting weapon that eventually made its way into military use and giving the name to the fusiliers.

This firearm seems to be of simple manufacture but with all the finesse of a gentlemans gun, the sideplate, cartouche and trigger guard are nicely worked and shaped with flowing arabesque designs and the buttplate is nicely etched.

The lockplate is engraved with a very basic ‘R.Wilson ‘ and some arabesque etchings.

There are the remains of gold inlay in the etchings.

The spring is in good order and the action works smoothly.

The fusil comes with its original ramrod.

~ Dimensions ~

The barrel is 40 inches (102 cm) long.

The fusil is 56 inches (142 cm) long.

The fusil is 3 inches (7.5 cm) wide at the lock.

The fusil weighs 2.75 Kg.

~ Condition ~

The firearm is in brilliant condition for its age.

There are some cosmetic scratches and some wear around the lockplate.

The spring is in good working order and the fusil will go to half and full cock.

The barrel has a dark patina but no pitting.

The bore appears to have some surface rust but no pitting or damage.

The retaining rings for the ramrod have some small dents but are still functional and in good shape.
