~ Circa 1900 Hand Signed Photograph Of The Artist William Lionel Wyllie In Portsmouth Harbour ~
A unique photograph of the pre-eminent Victorian maritime artist with presumably Portsmouth sea scouts (he was a great patron there) with a plethora of small craft and Royal Navy vessels in the background. The scene is a Northern view of Portsmouth Harbour.
To the reverse, it is signed in pencil “W. L. Wyllie”, “Dipping for the fishes” and “Mr. Wyllie in foreground in open boat” all in the artists hand writing.

William Lionel Wyllie (5 July 1851 – 6 April 1931) also known as W L Wyllie was a prolific English painter of maritime themes in both oils and watercolours. He has been described as “the most distinguished marine artist of his day.” His work is in the Tate, the Royal Academy, the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum, the National Museum of the Royal Navy, and many other institutions around the world.

The top right corner is scuffed and bent and there are also a few areas of surface loss.
