~ Circa 1900 Steam Capstan Bronze Top ~
A fine bronze top to a steam capstan made by Emerson, Walker & Thompson Bros Ltd.
The capstan top is of heavy bronze, circular in form with a raised middle section.
It has two bolt holes to the top.
The circular middle section reads ‘Emerson, Walker & Thompson Bros Ltd, PATENT 25760, Engineers, Gateshead & London’.
Emerson, Walker & Thompson Bros Ltd were formed in 1884 and changed their name in 1928 so the pieces was cast between those two dates.
~ Dimensions ~
The piece has a diameter of 22 ½ inches (57cm) and a depth of 3 inches (7.5cm). It weighs approximately 18Kg.
~ Condition ~
The piece is in good used condition. There are some stress cracks which are still very visible, some of which have been welded up.
~ Emerson Walker and Thompson Brothers Ltd ~
The company formed in 1884 as collaboration between ‘Emerson Walker’ and ‘Thompson Brothers’ in Dunston, County Durham. They were engineers and forge masters. The company was noted for steam windlasses and capstans.
