*German, WW2, 1936 Model, SS Honour Dagger and Type 1 Chained Scabbard*
218cm blade
Introduced in December 1933 as an SS honour weapon, alongside the honour ring and sword, the “SS-Ehrendolch” was the official dress uniform sidearm of all full members of the SS in the military. Candidates were not just handed a dagger. There was a very ritualistic torchlight ceremony in front of the hallowed Nazi shine in front of the Feldhernhalle in Munich on Nov. 9 every year.
The authorized wear of the chained SS or M36 dagger began in 1936, featuring factory-assembled daggers with unmarked blades. The reverse of the blade remains blank, devoid of any maker mark or RZM markings, while the obverse displays the inscription “Meine Ehre heiβt Treue” (My honor is loyalty), an inlaid NSDAP eagle, SS runes on the handle, and the letters Mi on the crossguard.
This dagger appears to be a Type 1 chain hanger, characterized by magnetic chains with die-stamped links showcasing alternating sigrunes and skull & crossbones with pebbled backgrounds. The upper chain includes two links with a square spacer next to the scabbard body, and the link adjacent to the spacer bears a centrally placed SS stamp on the reverse. The lower chain consists of four links, connecting at the top with a cloverleaf snap clip assembly. The link attaching the chain to the cloverleaf features an oval-shaped connector that appears longer. The cloverleaf is constructed from two pieces – a standard clip with the cloverleaf soldered to it – and the center band is attached to the scabbard body using two screws.
*Condition*
The pommel nut looks pristine and untouched. The blade is in excellent condition and the scabbard fits securely. There are minor scratches and dings to the grip and scabbard commensurate with age and service and honest wear and tear to the chain. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
