Description

*German, WW2, Iron Cross 2nd Class 1939 (Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse), Maker Marked “22” – Boerger & Co., Berlin*

An original German Iron Cross Second Class (Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse) of the 1939 issue, constructed in the traditional three-piece form with a magnetic iron core and two-piece silvered frame. The cross displays the classic blackened iron centre with raised swastika and the date 1939 to the obverse, while the reverse retains the historic date 1813, commemorating the original institution of the Iron Cross during the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon.

The frame features the typical fine beaded inner border and retains a pleasing aged patina with honest service wear consistent with age. The core remains magnetic, confirming the iron construction used in wartime production.

The suspension ring is clearly maker marked “22”, attributed to Boerger & Co., Berlin, one of the recognised manufacturers of Iron Crosses during the Second World War. The ring and suspension loop appear original to the piece.

Overall, a well-preserved example of this iconic German military decoration, retaining strong definition to the details and a good untouched appearance.

History Note:
The Iron Cross was originally instituted in 1813 by King Frederick William III of Prussia during the Napoleonic Wars as a decoration for bravery and distinguished service in combat. It was subsequently revived for later conflicts in 1870, 1914, and again in 1939 by Adolf Hitler at the outbreak of the Second World War.

The Iron Cross Second Class (EK2) was the most widely awarded grade of the decoration during WWII. It was typically presented for acts of bravery in combat or for significant contributions to military operations. Recipients usually wore the ribbon through the buttonhole of their field tunic, while the medal itself was generally kept for formal wear.

Although widely issued, authentic wartime examples with identifiable maker marks remain highly collectable, with individual manufacturers such as Boerger & Co., Berlin, producing crosses for the German military awards system.

*Condition*
Good original condition overall. The iron core retains much of its original black finish with minor surface marks from age and handling. The silvered frame shows natural toning and light wear consistent with period use. The cross remains magnetic as expected. The suspension ring is clearly stamped “22” and appears original. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
