*German, WW2, The Ground Assault Badge of the Luftwaffe – Erdkampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe*
A Luftwaffe Ground Assault Badge of die-stamped, two-part construction, featuring an eagle in tombak and a wreath in zinc. The reverse includes a vertical pin with a crimped barrel hinge and a round wire catch soldered onto a rectangular base. The badge is unmarked and made by an unknown manufacturer.
The Ground Assault Badge of the Luftwaffe (Erdkampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe) was instituted on March 31, 1942, by Hermann Göring, and was awarded to Luftwaffe personnel for their achievements in ground combat. Designed by Sigmund von Weech, the badge features an oak leaf wreath topped by a Luftwaffe eagle clutching a swastika, flying above a storm cloud with a lightning bolt striking the rough ground. The initial criteria for the badge required personnel to have participated in three separate combat operations, replacing the Infantry Assault Badge. As the war progressed, additional grades were introduced on November 10, 1944, to recognize those who had exceeded the initial criteria:
2nd Grade for 25 eligible operations
3rd Grade for 50 eligible operations
4th Grade for 75 eligible operations
5th Grade for 100 eligible operations
