~ Late 19th Century Walnut Writing Slope ~
A nice walnut writing slope dating to around the late 1800’s, maybe the early 1900’s.
The slope is of walnut with brass inlay edging. The lock plate and a cartouche to the top are painted to resemble
brass.
The box opens to reveal the writing slope which is of black leather with gilt detailing.
There are compartments at one end to house pens, nibs etc and included is an inkwell of glass with a brass screw top.
Both sides of the slope can be raised up for storage.
In one of the storage areas is a secret compartment that opens to reveal two small drawers. The secret compartment
is opened with a mechanism hidden within one of the compartments. The mechanism doesn’t work properly but by
simply loosening the screw a little, the compartment pops open easily.
The base of the slope is covered in a green hessian like material.
~ Dimensions ~
The piece measures 35cm (13 ¾ inches) by 24cm (9 ½ inches) with a height of 15cm (6 inches).
The slope when open has a length of 48cm (18 ¾ inches).
The piece weighs 3.06 Kg.
