~ MacIntyre Moorcroft Florian Ware Jug c1897/98 ~
In 1897 Macintyre & Co. Ltd employed William Moorcroft as a designer, and within a year he was put in full charge of the company’s
art pottery studio as Chief Designer.
Moorcroft’s first innovative range of pottery was called Florian Ware,
This jug is a lovely early example of Moorcrofts Florian Ware.
The single handed jug is of baluster form and has tube lined floral decoration in shades of blue throughout.
The inside of the jug is of a cream glaze.
The base has several marks which include: An impressed ‘McIntyre Burslem’ mark and a ‘Florian Ware’ mark in brown ink. Two incised marks that look like letter Ls, and an impressed mark of ‘2G’. Two marks in blue ink which are hard to distinguish and a registry design number dating the piece to 1897/98.
~ Dimensions ~
The jug has a diameter of 10cm (4 inches) and a height of 14cm (5 ½ inches).
It weighs 435g.
~ Condition ~
There looks to be a little over-painting to a section of the rim but no damage underneath and two small chips to the base edge but otherwise the jug is in a nice condition with minimal wear.
