~ Pair of Minton Castle Scene Plates c1878 ~
A lovely pair of decorative ceramic plates by Minton dating to 1878.
Though not an exact pair (one is slightly larger than the other) they are of the same style and date therefore it seems right to sell them as a pair.
The pair are of octagonal form in cream glaze with blue and white decoration.
To the centres are octagonal framed scenes of castles.
Around the circular centres are borders depicting birds and flowers.
The outer edges of the plates have ‘sunburst’ style motifs.
The plates both bear impressed marks of ‘Minton’ and a registry design mark. The Rd marks seems (though somewhat difficult to read) to show the date of manufacture as April, 1878. There is also a mark of a circle within a triangle to one of the plates which is a year mark and confirms the date as 1878.
~ Dimensions ~
One plate measures 23cm (9 inches) across.
The other measures 22cm (8 ½ inches) across.
The pair weigh 635g.
~ Condition ~
The larger of the two plates has four hairline cracks two of which are a little nibbled at the edge of the rim. The decoration on this plate is also not quite as crisp as the other but is still of nice quality.
The other has a single hairline crack which is visible from behind but only an inch of which can be seen from the front.
The pair both have a little crazing to the glaze but are otherwise in a nice condition and present well.
