*Rare, German, WW2, Torpedo Timer for TVA,”Torpedo-Versuchsanstalt, Gotenhafen, 1942, Nr.6″ (Torpedo-Experimental Station), by Junghans*
The clock has a circular body, 8″ diameter, the face is maker marked “Junghans”. The reverse is marked with a Kriegsmarine eagle and swastika over “M” acceptance and is stamped “Torpedo-Versuchsanstalt Gotenhafen 1942 Nr 6”. The top push button reverts the timers to the middle, the back key winds it up and the side arm stops and starts the timer.
The clock is 20.6cm diameter and is housed on a wooden base 22.5cm wide x 10cm deep and the clock stands 26.5cm tall including the top button.
This is a unique find. Operational from 1942 to 1945, the Hexengrund torpedo weapons site served as a testing facility for torpedoes at the Gotenhafen-Hexengrund torpedo weapons area in Bay of Danzig. This site was crucial for testing all new torpedoes intended for German U-boats and planes. The facility remained in use almost until the end of World War II.
The facility was a U-shaped, four-story building located in the bay, with an observation and command tower at the center. The building, made of reinforced concrete, extended to Gotenhafen-Hexengrund in Warnemünde. Two channels, approximately six meters wide and seven meters deep, separated the side wings from the main structure. The building housed two torpedo launch shafts measuring 1.5 meters wide and four meters deep. To catch fired torpedoes, a net was stretched between two smaller buildings in the bay.
*Condition*
This torpedo timer/stop watch appears to be in very good working order but has not been tested for accuracy. There is a hairline crack by the 5 but otherwise is almost immaculate. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
