The Mosin-Nagant, also known as Mosin’s rifle, is a five-shot, bolt-action military rifle with an internal magazine. It commonly uses the 7.62×54mmR cartridge. Developed from 1882 to 1891, it saw service in the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and other countries. With over 37 million units produced since 1891, it’s one of the most widely manufactured bolt-action rifles in history. Despite its age, it remains in use worldwide due to its reliability, simplicity, accuracy, and ability to be fully disassembled with a bayonet.
The Mosin Nagant M44 Carbine is a Russian/Soviet carbine-length, bolt action rifle in 7.62x54R. It’s a shorter, more compact version to the longer Mosin M1891s and 91/30s. It was developed during World War II to provide Soviet infantry with a shorter and more manoeuvrable firearm for close-quarters combat. While the M38 was made from 1938-45, the M44 was a late WWII modification that was only produced in Russia from 1944-48. Approximately 7.7 million had been produced in total, nearly all originating from the Izhevsk plant while only 100,000 rolled out of Tula. Other communist countries and Satellite soviet states also produced variants of the M44. One of the distinctive features of the M44 is the folding bayonet attached to the barrel. This bayonet could be folded out for use or folded back against the barrel when not in use. It was a practical addition for military purposes. The permanently attached side-folding cruciform-type bayonet, was a unique design feature at the time.
