Spectacular Samurai 19th Century Nodachi Signed And Dated Superb Japanese Sword

Nodachi Heavy Samurai Sword Used against Mounted Warriors 119cm long

Nodachi’s could be carried on the back or in the hand as they were too long to wear on a belt, they were used for downward strokes and specifally to fight mounted opponents, an important part of any collection and an awesome item.

Made By Musashi (Bushu) Fujiwara Norishige/ Suifu Ju Fujiwara Norishige. Dated Bunkyu Period (1861-1864) Specifically 3rd year 8th day so this sword was completed on 8th August 1863 and is fully referenced in Hawleys Japanese Swordsmiths (Nor 521) And worked in Hitachi Province. His real name was Naito Iheji and was a student of Kannai Norimune (Sesko, 2015:354)

*Condition*

The blade is in superb condition having been restored in the past, the Hamon is excellent and the blade very bright and free from any pitting. The grip, Tsuba and fittings are showing signs of age and loss of finish but are without damage and given the age have survived very well. The Menuki are excellent. The scabbard is good but there are a few minor cracks showing and loss of finish but for its age it is very good. There is a very small nick in the edge of the blade but you have to look for it to see it. It is pictured. Please see the pictures as they are part of our report.
