Description

*USA, 1926, Winchester Model 94 Lever-Action Rifle in .32-40, with Dies, Heads and New Cases, Obsolete Calibre*

A fine example of the iconic Winchester Model 1894 lever-action repeating rifle, manufactured in 1926 and chambered in the desirable .32-40 Winchester cartridge. This rifle bears the serial number 993486, confirming 1926 production, and features a round barrel measuring approximately 64.4cm (25.4 inches) with an overall length of 114cm, it has a good bore.

The receiver is marked “Model 94 – Winchester – Trademark Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. & FGN”, while the barrel carries the manufacturer’s legend “Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. New Haven, Conn. U.S.A. Patented August 21, 1894”, alongside the calibre marking “.32-40”. Clear Winchester proof marks are also present. The rifle retains its original buckhorn rear sight, the elevator stamped ‘PAT. APPL’D FOR.’”

This example is accompanied by a complete reloading package, including: A boxed set of LEE Reloading Dies for .32-40 WCF. A bag of unprimed Winchester .32-40 brass cases. A supply of cast lead bullets.

Markings:
-Underside of the receiver, forward of the lever: Serial number: 993486 (Winchester production 1926)
-Underside of the lower tang: ‘5’ factory assembly number on .
-Top tang: “Model 94 – Winchester – Trademark Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. & FGN”
-Barrel: “32-40” with Winchester proof marks
-Barrel legend: “Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. New Haven, Conn. U.S.A. Patented August 21, 1894”
-Buckhorn rear sight: ‘PAT. APPL’D FOR.’

Historical Note:
The Winchester Model 1894, designed by John Browning and introduced in 1894, is among the most successful sporting rifles ever made. Its innovative use of smokeless powder cartridges revolutionized hunting rifles at the end of the 19th century. The .32-40 WCF was originally introduced in the 1880s for target shooting and soon found favour as a deer cartridge in the Model 1894. By the 1920s, when this example was produced, the .32-40 was a somewhat rarer chambering, overshadowed by the ubiquitous .30-30, making rifles like this particularly appealing to today’s collectors.

*Condition*
This rifle and accessories are obsolete calibre and a gun license is NOT required for purchase. The rifle is in excellent service-used condition with a patinated grey-brown finish to the receiver, showing age-appropriate handling wear. The barrel retains much of its blue finish with crisp barrel markings. The walnut stock and for-end are solid with scattered handling marks and light bruising consistent with age and use but free from cracks or repairs. The bore remains in good condition, showing strong rifling with only light age-related wear. The action cycles correctly, the loading gate is intact, and the bore appears serviceable, with visible rifling under age-related wear. The buttplate shows matching patina and retains the trapdoor compartment. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
