~ W. L. Wyllie Framed Watercolour Of HMS Naiad (1890) ~
A fine original watercolour painting of HMS Naiad, painted around the turn of the century, circa 1900 by the renowned maritime
artist William Lionel Wyllie.
HMS Naiad was an Apollo-class protected cruiser of the Royal Navy which served from 1892 to 1919.
The ship is painted at sea with other various ships of the Royal Navy in the background. Just to the left of Naiad is a sea fort. Owing to
Wyllies connection to Portsmouth we can assume that the fort is probably one of the Solent forts lying in Portsmouth harbour off the
coast of Southsea.
As with all of Wyllies work, the painting is beautifully executed and accurate in detail.
The painting is signed by the artist in the bottom right hand corner.
The painting is mounted and presented in a glazed wood frame.
~ Dimensions ~
The painting measures 70cm (27 ½ inches) by 42cm (16 ½ inches).
The frame measures 97.5cm (38 ¼ inches) by 65.5cm (25 ¾ inches).
It weighs 4.82 Kg.
~ Condition ~
The painting is in very good order with only one or maybe two tiny foxing dots but overall very clean.
The mount has a little damage to one edge but is otherwise in good order.
The frame is also in good order. The back board, made up of three parts is a little warped and is currently secured with tape but is
mostly sound.
