~ Walnut Writing Slope c1900 ~
A handsome walnut writing slope dating to around the turn of the 19th/20th century.
The slope is of walnut with brass edges and lock plate and a brass coloured cartouche to the top with brass inlay edging.
The box opens to reveal the writing slope which is of black leather with gilt detailing.
There are compartments at one end to house pencils etc and both sides of the slope can be raised up for storage.
In one of the storage areas is a secret compartment that opens to reveal three small drawers. The secret compartment is opened with a mechanism hidden within the pen compartments. The mechanism doesn’t work properly but by simply loosening the screw a little the compartment pops open easily.
~ Dimensions ~
The slope when closed measures 18 inches (46cm) by 10 inches (25.5cm) by 7 ½ inches (19cm).
The slope when open has a length of 20 ½ inches (52cm).
The piece weighs 4.37Kg.
~ Condition ~
The leather has a few worn patches, and a little of the brass inlay around the cartouche is missing.
The baize to the base is quite worn.
In general the piece is in a nice condition with only a little wear in the way of a few small scratches and a couple of small dings but there are no major damages.
One of the catches that hold the slop sides in place is a little awkward to use as its worn but does work with a little patience.
The key to the lock is missing and is currently is in the ‘locked’ position, but open and ready to use.
