~ Walter Lampl Cigarette Case & Compact c1920/30s ~
A lovely and unusual combination cigarette and compact case by Walter Lampl of New York, dating to the 1920’s/1930’s.
The company of Walter Lampl was started in 1921 by a young entrepreneur Walter Lampl. He opened his first store on New Yorks 47th
St, later moving to Fifth Avenue . The company specialised in jewellery and famously used the motto, “Creators of the Unusual, As
Usual.”
This lovely chromed steel and black enamel cigarette case also doubles as a ladies compact.
The front of the piece has an enamelled panel decorated with a portrait of a horse on a cream ground. This panel lifts to reveal a
mirror and sections for powder and rouge.
The interior has a machine turned finish with sections for cigarettes with spring clips on either side.
The piece is stamped inside the compact section ‘WL Licensed PAT. 1869983’, the WL obviously for Walter Lampl.
The piece comes with original powder puff and some remnants of powder (both used) and the rouge with puff still in its wrapping.
It comes in a vintage Abercrombie & Fitch card box, though this seems unrelated.
~ Dimensions ~
The piece measures 6.5cm by 7cm.
It weighs 104g.
~ Condition ~
There is a little oxidation to the inner edge of the compact area (see photos) but otherwise the piece is in a lovely condition with
minimal wear and no damage.
