~ Scottish Presentation Silver Hilt 1796 Pattern For Captain Wilson, Dated 1802 ~
The sword comes with its silver and black leather scabbard. The dating markings are still visible on it and are period ones, as they are on the silver hilt.
The etchings on the blade are exquisite, from arms and banners, Britania, imagery of Rolay Navy’s ships to a depiction of St. Andrews in a cartouch with the inscription Nemo me impune lacessit (No one provokes me with impunity), the Latin motto of the Royal Stuart dynasty of Scotland from at least the reign of James VI (the adopted motto of the Order of the Thistle and of three Scottish regiments of the British Army). They are present throughout the length of the blade from the ricasso to the tip, which is rather unusual.
One side of the blade reads:
‘A present from the non-commissioned officers & privates of the 3rd company of Renfrewshire yeomanry to Capt’n Andrew Wilson being an expression of their esteem & attachment to him for his persevering attention to their discipline & ergonomy while they had the honour of being commanded by him as their captain, 27th February 1802’.
The grip of the piece is entirely made by silver whilst the other elements are silver-plated brass.
