*WW2, German, 1943, K98 Bolt Action Rifle, with Winter Trigger and Sling and K98 Bayonet and Scabbard. Deactivated*
Mauser Rifle:
On June 21st, 1935, the German Wehrmacht officially selected the Karabiner 98k (abbreviated as “kurz,” meaning “short”) as its standard service rifle, a role it maintained throughout World War II. This bolt-action rifle, chambered in 8mm Mauser (7.92 x 57), features an internal 5-round magazine. It has a winter trigger which makes it a very rare find and suggests that it saw action at the Battle of Stalingrad on the Eastern Front.
The top of the receiver is marked with an Waffenamt Eagle 135 and “byf” for Mauser factory production and “43″ for 1943. 1943 saw greater emphasis placed on production numbers due to the staggering losses of men and weapons on all fronts. The left receiver wall is marked “Mod. 98”. It is serial numbered “21467 d” on the left of the receiver, “21467” on the left of the stock and with electric pencil in three places on the bolt and on the base of the trigger. Stamped 4606 on the upper band, 9741 on the cocking piece, 6292b on the bolt lever, 378 with a Waffenamt numbered W8A655 on the base plate and 4966 on the upper base plate with two Waffenamts numbered 280. Numerous Waffenamts. One-piece stock as opposed to the later laminated stock. Stock plate marked “gqm 41”. It is particularly rare to find a Mauser with its winter trigger (it was far too cold to take your gloves off to fire) – the trigger is marked “K98” on both sides, dated “41” and has a Waffenamt.
Bayonet
Serial number F13305 marked on the cross guard. H97 on the scabbard. Two straight armed Waffenamts numbers with indistinct letters on the pommel and two more on the scabbard finial.
*Condition*
The Rifle is in excellent condition and is a great find with its winter trigger. Old Spec, Deactivated with working bolt action. The metal surfaces retains great original blue finish with an excellent patina on the wood surfaces. The stock is fine with numerous small dings and dents. Markings are clear. The bayonet fits snugly and has a working button and fits its scabbard securely. Both rifle and bayonet have the expected wear and tear commensurate with its expected age and history. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
