*British, 1853 Pattern Enfield 3 Band Percussion Rifle Musket, Dated 1857.*
The Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket, also known as the P53 Enfield, stands as one of the most pivotal firearms of the 19th century. This .577 calibre Minié-type muzzle-loading rifled musket served the British Empire from 1853 to 1867 and played a significant role in the Crimean War from 1854 to 1856. Initially distributed in February 1855, the Enfield P53 was introduced to Indian troops in 1856. Its association with controversial greased cartridges, suspected of containing animal fat (pig, mutton, or beef), became a catalyst for the Indian Rebellion of 1857, leading to a bloody insurrection and a transformative impact on the political landscape of the subcontinent.
Marked with a Crown over VR, 1857 Enfield, and a Crown cypher over a war arrow on the lock plate, Crown over B3 on sight, and serial number 1756 on the barrel, this rifle has regimental markings/stores numbers H 200 on the lockplate and 200 on the stock. It measures 139cm overall, with a 99cm barrel.
The term “rifle-musket” originally referred to muskets with the smooth-bored barrels replaced with rifled barrels. The length of the barrels were unchanged, allowing the weapons to be fired in ranks, since a long rifle was necessary to enable the muzzles of the second rank of soldiers to project beyond the faces of the men in front. The weapon would also be sufficiently long when fitted with a bayonet to be effective against cavalry. Such weapons manufactured with rifled barrels, muzzle loading, single shot, and utilizing the same firing mechanism, also came to be called rifle-muskets.

The Pattern 1853 Enfield, developed by the Royal Small Arms Factory in the 1850s, featured a 39-inch barrel with three grooves, 1:78 rifling twist, and an adjustable ladder rear sight with steps up to 400 yards.

This is a lovely percussion musket with a great patina. It is in good condition with minor dents and scratches commensurate with age and service. Cocks and dry fires. Obsolete Calibre. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
