The 25-pounder, arguably the most versatile field gun during the Second World War, utilized a unique firing system. Its ammunition consisted of two parts—the projectile and the propelling charge, typically housed in a brass cartridge case with an integrated primer. The Mark II case, as described in the gun’s 1940 handbook, is crafted from solid-drawn brass, featuring a slight taper from the base to within 1.1 inches of the mouth, where it adopts a cylindrical shape. The recessed base is centrally bored and screw-threaded to accommodate the percussion primer. Additionally, it extends circumferentially to create a rim, facilitating automatic ejection by the breech mechanism extractor when the breech opens after firing.
