~ Late 18thC Baroque Style Hardwood Carved Christian Figure Of A Woman In Prayer ~
A beautiful baroque style carved Christian figure in hardwood produced in southern India circa 1770-1780.
Acquired from the Garrard Le Man collection.
Although reminiscent in style to European Christian figures produced in the 17th century, due to the type of exotic hardwood used we can trace the origins of this piece instead to the area around southern India. It is therefore it is more than likely that the figure would have been carved in the late 18th century but based on the earlier 17th century baroque style of religious carving.
The figure portrays a lady with long flowing hair and robes with her hands in prayer. She stands upon an orb mounted with a cherubs head and wings. This is then set on an octagonal stepped plinth.
The figure has carved bone (bovine: cow) hands and face, superbly carved with great detail.
The figure is hand-painted including dainty flower to the robes and gilt detail throughout.
~ Dimensions ~
The figure stands at 33cm (13 inches) and weighs 810g.
~ Condition ~
The figure is in a lovely condition with only a few tiny chips and some wear to the paint in parts, which would be expected of a piece of this age.
There are some small splits in the wood which again is to be expected.
The bone face and hands have miraculously survived with no damages despite their delicate nature.
