The Assaye battle honor was awarded to East India Company battalions and British Army regiments for their participation in the Battle of Assaye on 23 September 1803. Under Major General Arthur Wellesley’s command, British and native troops defeated a large Maratha Confederacy force. The honor, granted with the device of an elephant, was bestowed by the Governor General of British India in October 1803.
The Highland Light Infantry (HLI) was a light infantry regiment of the British Army formed in 1881. It took part in the First and Second World Wars, until it was amalgamated with the Royal Scots Fusiliers in 1959 to form the Royal Highland Fusiliers
