This is a very hard-to-find item. The PBS-1 is a silencer designed for the 7.62x39mm AKM variant of the Soviet AK-47 assault rifle within the Kalashnikov rifle family.
The PBS-1 silencer, introduced in the 1960s, was primarily used by Spetsnaz forces and the KGB to reduce the noise of the AKM when firing. It saw significant use during the Soviet–Afghan War in the 1980s because the newer AK-74 did not initially have an available silencer. This changed with the introduction of the AKS-74UB, a variant of the AK-74 adapted for use with the PBS-4 suppressor and subsonic 5.45×39mm Russian ammunition.
The PBS-1 is a two-chambered silencer utilizing baffles and a rubber wipe, designed specifically for use with subsonic rifle ammunition. The United States Army Foreign Weapons Test Lab extensively tested the PBS-1, which requires replacement of the rubber wipe after 20-25 rounds. When the rubber wipe is intact, the PBS-1 effectively reduces the sound of an AKM discharge by 15 dB, bringing the noise level to between 130 and 135 dB.
