~ M1895 Prussian Infantry Regiment 23 Reservists Officers Pickelhaube Helmet ~
The helmet has a black leather skull with brass trimmed front visor.
The gilt helmet plate consists of the crowned eagle facing left with crest on the breast over an eight pointed ‘hochgewölbten’ starburst with the badge solely used by the 23 infantry regiment & reservists cross to the fore.
The cross reads “MIT GOTT FUR FUERST UND VATERLAND 1813” (With God and Kingdom of Homeland, 1813).
The brass type ‘spike’ sits on a circular base with four surrounding stars and ‘mother of pearl’ banding.
It has a rounded rear neck, the correct cockades and leather backed chin scales.
The rear brass spine is unvented, this is often the case with model 1895 picklehaubes that are not regular infantry.
It is complete with its brown leather hat band but a modern replacement black fabric liner.
The reverse of the spine going under the rear visor bears a brass label with number ‘56’.
~ Dimensions ~
The helmet measures 10 inches (25.5 cm) tall (including the spike) with a length of 9.25 inches (23 cm) and a width of 7 ½ inches (19 cm).
It weighs 400 grams.
~ Condition ~
We believe that the helmet has been restored at one point in time by one of the owners.
The helmet is in fair condition. The leather skull keeps a good form but the leather has surface cracks and the rear visor is burned.
The chin scales are complete.
There is one dent on the spike.
The liner has minor tears but its general condition is good.
