~ WW2 German Navy – Memories of War – Photo Album ~
The album named KriegsErinnerungen (memories of war) is a collection of pictures depicting the U-Boat service and its heroes. An excellent tool for any researcher, historian or collector.
Please mind the fact that only a selection of pictures is displayed above the listing.
Most of the pictures are from the period, others are quite new copies of the old ones.
The flags on the cover are the ones of the Imperial navy, suggesting that the album is slightly older than the pictures inside it.
On the reverse of one of the first postcards with the submarine U-35 reads:
“Dear Mother
Arrived well in Leer. It is very beautiful here. Tell me the address of father. Greetings to Lydia and Heinz. Many greetings to Miss Rieben. Abs. Sailor Max Schömer 1. Kop. 8 p. St. A. Leer – (From Matrose Max Schömer First company 8 naval basic training regiment Leer)”.
Dear Mother
Amongst the pictures are some with famous captains like Carl Emmermann & Hermann Hoffmann, Wolfgang Lüth , Erich Top, Reinhard Suhren, Otto Schuhart, Captain Moehle on its U-123,
Kurt Baberg of U-618, Hans-Gerrit von Stockhausen U-65.
Also there are pictures with daily activities of the Kriegsmarine, U-boats in action (U-451, U-178 – Emmerman -, U-333, U-163 and many others ), with the u-boat bunkers of St Nazairewith the Torpedoboothalbflottillie and various sailors.
The postcard depicting the 4th Torpedoboothalbflottillie is also a letter home dated Wilhelmshaven 28.04.1941.
Quite a number of them have short personal letters addressed to the family on the back or explanations.
