Description

*Very rare, 11th Hussars Prince Alberts Own Officer’s Mameluke Levee Sword, Andrews of Pall Mall*

Rare sword to one of the most famous cavalry regiments of the British Army, the 11th Prince Albert’s Own Hussars.

The officers Mameluke style sword with its 79.5cm curved blade, has excellent clear etching to the blade with Crown floral sprays, regimental details "Prince Alberts Own Hussars, The X1" and battle honours "Egypt, Salamanca, Peninsula, Waterloo, Bhurtpore, Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann and Sevastopol", the reverse has the royal Cypher VR along with the retailers names "Andrews 9 Pall Mall, London". "Andrews, Pall Mall" is also engraved to the underside of the cross guard.

The mameluke hilt with rose to centre of the cross guard and dress knot. The sword is fitted into its steel scabbard with very fine deep gilded mounts with both hanging rings present. Original officers coloured bullion sword knot attached to the grips. Housed in its steel scabbard with fine quality gilded mounts

This cavalry unit was raised in 1715. It continued in British Army service until 1969, when it merged with the 10th Hussars to form The Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales's Own).

*Condition*
This rare find is in excellent condition with only minor nicks and some tarnishing to the blade. The grip is also in excellent condition, slightly loose to the touch but everything is complete and in position. This is a very good example of a rare, hard to find sword. The scabbard is also in excellent condition with a nice tight draw, it has some minor age related wear and tear. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
