Description

*Queen Elizabeth II, Royal Navy Officers 1827 Pattern Sword and Scabbard, by Wilkinson of London*

An excellent example of a lion pommel headed 1927 Pattern Sword. The first Royal Navy pattern sword was created in 1805, its elegant but impractical design being superseded by a solid-hilt design developed in 1827.

In 1846, a blade was standardized for all Royal Navy Officers. The current light, single-edged straight blade was adopted in 1929.

Carried by RN Commissioned Officers. Brass hilt with crown and anchor cypher with copper wire bound white shagreen grip and a brass pommel in the form of a lion. The inside section of the guard folds on a brass hinge towards the blade, to engage with a pin on the scabbard top mount and allow the sword to rest easily against the wearer's side when worn. The hinged guard flap, which had been standard (if not universal) from 1822, started to disappear in the 1850s, to be replaced by a solid brass guard almost universally after around 1860. 780mm single edged blade engraved with the royal cypher, "by Appointment to her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11, Sword Cutlers. Wilkinson Sword, London, Made in England", Serial number CTX015 on the spine. The scabbard is made of rawhide with gold-plated brass mounts.

*Condition*
The blade is in immaculate condition with very minor tarnishing. The brass work is burnished to silver in places. The sword sheaths and draw very well but does not fit tight to the guard. Some minor wear and tear to the scabbard and again brass work is silvering. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
