*German, WW2, Mod.98 (K98) Mauser Bolt Action Rifle, Dated 1944, by Waffen Werke Brunn (dot) with Sling, Plus 1944 K98 Bayonet made by Alexander Coppel of Solingen (fnj 44), with 1939 E.Pack&S Scabbard & Frog, Old Spec Deactivated*

7.92mm Cal, Serial number 6431 ao
Measures approx: 110cm overall, barrel length 24"
Marked on the barrel: dot, waffenamt 63, 1944

On June 21st, 1935, the German Wehrmacht officially selected the Karabiner 98k (abbreviated as “kurz,” meaning “short”) as its standard service rifle, a role it maintained throughout World War II. This bolt-action rifle, chambered in 8mm Mauser (7.92 x 57), features an internal 5-round magazine.

The top of the receiver is marked with the German war time manufacturers code “dot” for production by Waffen Werke Brunn Czechoslovakia. As soon as Czechoslovakia was annexed by Germany, the factory at Brunn was taken over and K98s were turned out from there, in great numbers, for the rest of the war. Waffen Werke typically marked the full year “1944” rather than partial “44” like other manufacturers’. There are two waffenamts numbered “63” on the right and one in the midle below dot. The left receiver wall is marked “Mod. 98”. It is serial numbered “6431 ao” with an eagle waffenamt on the left of the receiver and inverted pair of V's above the serial number. It is numbered 6431 on the stock and on the bolt. Numerous waffenamts throughout. One-piece stock as opposed to the later laminated stock.

Marked on the bolt (electro pencil): 6431
Marked on the stock: 6431
Marked underneath the stock: P 3822
Marked on the sight: Increments 1-20, 71, waffenamt 26 81
Marked on the bolt: 9510 and on safety 1765
Marked underneath bolt lever: waffenamt 63
Marked on magazine cover: waffenamt 77, 7375, and on the front section: two waffenamts WaA623, 2196
Marked on nose: waffenamt 26, 22

1944 Alexander Coppel (fnj) Bayonet & 1939 E. Pack & S Scabbard, with Frog
Bayonet marked fnj 44 on the ricasso for Alexander Coppel of Solingen 1944. On the obverse the serial number 9744c. There are two waffemants discernable on the pommel. The handle has a straight pommel of simplified design, which has a cloverleaf-shaped groove with a split-nut locking knob. The blade is blued and fullered. This is a great example of the knife bayonet used with the 8 mm. Mauser Kar 98k, the Seitengewehr (sidearm) M1884/98 Third Pattern. The scabbard is serial number 8089, marked (indistinct) E. Pack & S & dated 1939. The leather frog is unmarked.

The K98 bayonet, adopted by the Wehrmacht in 1934 under the Third Reich, evolved from the Model 1884-98 bayonet (2nd type) used in World War I from 1915 onward with the 8mm. Mauser Gewehr 98. Crafted from a single piece, its pommel, tang, and blade are secured by two polished rivets. Its sheet metal flame arrestor, with two waste evacuation holes, fits the cleaning rod perfectly – originally designed during World War I so that the shorter barrel of the Mauser would not damage the top of the pads by burning. The M1884-1898 also featured a robust bayonet mounting bar, eliminating the need for a muzzle ring and improving accuracy. Known as the K98 or M1884/98 Type III Bayonet had all the features of the type two and had wooden or plastic grips. This bayonet has plastic grips.

*Condition*
The Rifle is in excellent condition and is a great find. Old Spec, deactivated with working bolt action, cocks and dry fires.  The metal surfaces retains great original blue finish with an excellent patina on the wood surfaces. The stock is fine with numerous small dings and dents and some wear to the elbow. Strap looks original. The bayonet and scabbard are in good condition with some rusting to the pommel and cross bar and scabbard. Press button works. Scabbard fits securely. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
