Picture 3: 17.4cm x 12.7cm

HMS E4 was a British E-class submarine built by Vickers, costing £101,900. Laid down on 16 May 1911, launched on 5 February 1912, and commissioned on 28 January 1913, she served in the 8th Submarine Flotilla. E4 took part in early World War I patrols in the North Sea, engaging German naval forces and airships. She fired on enemy submarines, sank the German trawler Senator von Berenburg Goszler, and survived air attacks. In September 1915, she was fitted with anti-aircraft guns for Zeppelin defence, later engaging the airship SL3.

On 15 August 1916, E4 collided with her sister ship E41 during exercises off Harwich, sinking with all hands. E41 also went down, but 14 crew members survived. Both submarines were salvaged, repaired, and recommissioned. E4 remained in service until the end of World War I, listed in the 9th Submarine Flotilla. She was decommissioned in December 1918 and sold for scrap to the Upnor Ship Breaking Company on 21 February 1922.
